Event List View
To easily find the needed content inside the media, VidiEditor supports the usage of event lists created by different application such as:
VidiCore Thumbnail Scene Detection
Logging applications such as MediaLogger
AI Services
VidiFlow service providing such data
An event list is a list of timecode positions over the media holding metadata information spanning from in to out on the media. This allows to fulfill various use cases such as:
Visualizing scene changes
Speech-to-text
Manual logging of content
Original record time on camera cards
Subtitling
The availability and naming of those event list depends on the system and its surrounding service creating such lists. Due to this, the current section only describes the usage of existing event lists in VidiEditor based on some examples.
Navigating into the Event List View
The Event List View is accessible from the project bin while using a double click on items of type video including camera card an partial items.
Doing so will have VidiEditor navigate into the event list view:
This view shows all event lists existing on the item and which have been configured to be usable in VidiEditor. The user can switch between the event lists using the header tabs. The visualization of the events differs based on its type, configuration and existing metadata. The above image offers an example on how an event list for camera card clips might look like displaying the IN and OUT points, duration as well as thumbnails, and one metadata field.
Thumbnail
A more specific and different visualization can be seen on the VidiCore thumbnails event list displaying only the thumbnails without any metadata or timecode information. This allows to easily navigate in the media content having a wider overview about the scenes inside a video.
Using Events
The events in the event list are clickable an provide several functionalities listed in the following:
Highlight the active media content form Source Player. While being in the event list view and having the same media loaded in the source player, the event list will highlight the matching event for the current timecode position of the player's playhead. So while playback the user sees the corresponding event. In this example, the the thumbnail is highlighted.
Navigate to event with a click. This allows one to position the playhead of the player to the segment's IN position by simply clicking on the event. This enables the user to quickly find the content needed based on the event list.
3. Load video to source player from the event via drag and drop or double click. This allows the user to load the video using a segment. To the user’s convenience this loads the media in the source player if not loaded yet, while also setting the IN and OUT points in the player to edit media faster.
4. Add event to timeline with IN / OUT evaluated correctly. This allows faster editing while using the context menu or drag and drop. In this manner the user gets a timeline segment on for the range of the event.
User Preferences in Eventlists
Depending on the users preferred way to work or on the use case done, some behaviour can be switched for dealing with events per user. To do so simply hover on the bottom area of the eventlist view to blend in options switchable.
Following options exist:
Set In/Out
This allows to define if In/Out markers are set when navigating the source player though events or if only the playhead position is adjusted.
State Off: The playhead in source player will navigate to the segment In on navigation
State On: The playhead in source player will navigate to the segment In and additionally the In adn Out marker will be set to In / Out positions
Set Thumbnail Size
This option is only available for the thumbnail eventlist and allows to dynamically change the display size of the thumbnails shown. This is of advantage as different media is easier or harder to see by the user depending on the content and duration of the media.
Searching and Refreshing Events
It is possible to filter the text of the events using the search bar on top of the view. Events without a matching term will be blend out.
Also the lens button besides the search filter allows to research the term as well as reloading the eventlist in case of changes. This can be of advantage when working with growing media where the eventlist creation is still in progress or in case of changes done on the eventlist from a 3rd party application.
Using event lists as rough cut edit
It was explained above that a single event can be dragged to timeline directly to append it to the timeline composition. It is also possible to add all segments to timeline with one user interaction. This is of advantage depending on the data of the eventlist. Imagine for example an AI service that created an auto cut selection for highlights and stored this information as events. Having this information usable on timeline can speed up the work significantly.
To import all events in one go simply select the needed eventlist header and drag it to the desired timeline track.
While dragging an information will be shown how many events will be imported as timeline segments. The wanted track can be chosen and snapping functionality will help to import the events frame accurately on the wanted position.
The result in timeline for above example will look as follows, where all segments got imported as timeline segments.
Please note that the import process can take some time if the eventlist has many events. In this case a message is shown and the user needs to wait for the process to be completeted.
