EDL Import / Export [VE UG]
VidiEditor is able to describe complex mixings of media in a multi track timeline, visualized to the user graphically as shown in the image below.
This type of description is saved in the systems backend is usually named as Editing Description List (EDL). In some scenarios, it makes sense to access this technical description, for example to:
Troubleshoot problems
Exchange a timeline
When building 3rd party integrations
As a result, VidiEditor allows one to export and import back EDLs in different formats if the feature is enabled in the system's configuration (see Timeline Configuration Parameters) - the following formats are possible:
VidiEditor Timeline JSON (Import and Export)
VidiCore Sequence Document (Import and Export)
Final Cut Pro XML (Export only) as explained in Export Final Cut Pro XML and Final Cut Pro 7 XML Export
Because the 3rd case for Final Cut Pro demands a more complex transformation and configuration, it is explained independently. The 1st and 2nd format will be explained as follows:
Export
To export a timeline, simply click on the split area of the timeline publish button:
Depending on the configuration, the possible formats to download will be offered. Choosing “VE Timeline JSON” or “Sequence Document XML” will result in a file download executed in the web browser and can be found under the web browser downloads:
Import
To import such a file back a split button in the Timeline pane can be used requiring to choose the uploaded format:
When doing so, VidiEditor will create a new timeline based ion the given file and being presented to the user. It should be possible working with this in VidiEditor normally afterwards.
Limitations on Import
As the different formats allow different possibilities, as well as considering staging environments, it should be mentioned that limitations exist and that the import / export can result in a loss of information depending on what data is used. See also Timeline Sequences Data [VE OG] and Timeline Data Transformation [VE OG].
